    Fun With Colours
Colours can change your mood, so why not go for something that relieves the stress of a long day? When you come home, you can feel immediately relaxed in a calm environment. Or if you are bored, choose more daring combinations to get your creative juices flowing!

    Hot colours
Red and Orange attract attention. For this reason, red is often used in graphic signs and designs. Hot colours are strong and aggressive and seem to vibrate within their own space.

    Cold colours
Light blues remind us of ice and snow. Cold blue slows the metabolism and increases one’s sense of calm. When placed next to each other, cold and hot colours contrast, like fire and ice.

    Warm colours
Pinks and greens are comforting, spontaneous and welcoming.

    Cool colours
Blues and greens are like a swim in a refreshing, tropical pool. Like spring growth, they make us feel renewed. Soothing and calm, these hues provide a sense of depth as well as comfort.

    Light colours
Open up the surroundings and suggest airiness, like sheer curtains at a window. They send us a message of relaxation, rest and tranquillity.

    Dark colours
Concentrated and serious in their effect. Combining lights and darks together is a common and dramatic way to represent the opposites in nature, such as night and day.

    Pale colours
Like ivory, light blue and pink, suggest gentleness. They can be seen in the clouds in the soft, early light of a misty morning. Because they are calming colours, pale hues are frequently used in interior spaces.

    Bright colours
Vivid and attract attention. Exhilarating and cheerful, bright colours are perfect for use in packaging, fashion and advertising.

    General Safety for Your Child
Fix up gates to keep your baby from wandering into dangerous areas such as the kitchen, staircases, outer doors, etc. These are available in pressure-mounted (portable) and wall mounted (permanently) models.

Stick on Finger Pinch Guards – This is a sponge attached to the edge of the door to prevent the door from slamming shut on little fingers.

Protect little ones from sharp edges with adhesive corner and edge guards, which pad

any sharp corners on furniture, doors, windows, etc. Prevent children from pulling all your drawers out and hurting themselves if the contents fall on their heads: use drawer latches.

    Kitchen Safety for Your Child
Keep liquor, medicines and chemicals in the highest cupboards.

Secure cupboard doors with a small padlock or combination padlock, not just a safety latch.

Install safety plugs to block electrical sockets when they are not in use.

Keep all cable cords as short as possible. If they are too long, use a reel winder or cable organiser to prevent children from chewing live wires.

Fit special childproof latches on doors of fridges, as well as on other appliances such as ovens.

Prevent children from turning on the stove with secure covers for the knobs.

    Bathroom Safety for Your Child

Keep toilet lids closed at all times with a latch. Use a soft shield around the bathtub tap to keep your baby’s head safe from bumps during bath time.

Use non slip strips on the bottom of the tub and on the floor to prevent slipping

How to maintain your rechargeable batteries?
    1) When you charge the batteries for the first time, or if the batteries have been stored for a long time, it normally takes about 3 charge and discharge cycles for the batteries to reach full capacity.

    2) Discharging rechargeable batteries till they hold no charge at all can damage or destroy batteries. Here, the term, fully discharge, refers to the practice of using batteries until the device that they power does not operate normally or the device tells the user to replace the batteries, or discharging batteries to their lowest safe level in a "reconditioning" battery charger.

    3) Many modern devices with sophisticated electronic circuitry turn themselves off when batteries are low. However, a simple device, such as a flashlight, might, if left on, discharge batteries so thoroughly that they become damaged.

    4) NiCd and NiMH batteries can also be damaged by over charging. Once a battery has been recharged, it is recommended that users do not try to add additional charge to the battery by sending it through another recharge cycle before using the battery.

    5) Do not charge batteries of different capacity at the same time.

    Wiring a Plug
    Step 1:
The international color codes for electrical wires are Green/Yellow, Brown/Red and Blue/Black.

    Green / Yellow – Earth

    Brown / Red – Live

    Blue / Black – Neutral

    Step 2:
Most plugs are supplied with instructions as to where to attach the respective wires. If not, unscrew the outer screws of the plug and take a look inside: on the plastic moulding of the plug, you should also see the letters E (Earth) L (Live) and N (Neutral) to guide you. See the picture below, which shows you the wire positions.

    Step 3:
Measure the cable up against the plug to see how much you need to cut to get the right length for the longest wire (E).

    Step 4:
Use a thin knife to cut away the outer white casing of the cable to expose the three inner wires. Cut carefully, so that you don’t cut the casings of the inner wires.

    Step 5:
Cut 1/2- 1cm of the casing of the earth wire and with your fingers twist the bundle of copper wires inside to make a neat end. With a small screwdriver, loosen the screw for the earth wire, insert the earth wire inside and tighten the screw firmly, making sure that no loose copper threads are left outside.

    Step 6:
Measure the length for the live wire and proceed as with the Earth wire. It may be easier for you to remove the fuse while you insert the earth wire. Then it just slots back in again.

    Step 7:
Do the same procedure for the neutral wire.

    Step 8:
Make one final check to see that all screws are tight and that no stray copper wires are exposed. Then replace the top of the plug and screw back tightly.

    Step 9:
Test the appliance by plugging it in and turning on the switch. If nothing happens, open up the plug and check that you have the colours correct; tug gently on the three wires to see that they are properly secured. If they come away with a slight pull, the screw has not been tightened enough.

    Replacing a Fluorescent Tube
    Step 1
Turn off the power to the light fixture at the main service panel.

    Step 2
Remove the diffuser to expose the fluorescent tube(s).

    Step 3
Remove the tube by rotating it. Twist and turn the tube in any direction to disengage the tube and gently slide it out of the sockets.

    Step 4
Inspect the pins to see if they are bent or broken; if so, replace the tube.

    Step 5
The ends of a worn-out tube are dark gray.

    Step 6
Insert the new tube so that the pins slide fully into the sockets, then twist and turn in any direction until the tube is securely in place.

    Step 7
Reattach the diffuser and switch the power back on.

    Proper Wash For Your Car
Each car wash consist of special additional ingredients, eg, rust inhibitors, form a glossy water repellent barrier which protects and extended the effect of using wax polish. It also preserved the overall finish and appearance.

    Step 1
Generally, use 1 or 2 capfuls to a bucket of water. Always check the instructions on the bottle before use.

    Step 2
Always wash the car from top to bottom to allow dirt to flow down and reduce the risk of scratching the bodywork when sponging. Sponge the car,one side at a time in downwards motion. Wash off the foam, before starting on the other side.

    Step 3
After washing, it is highly recommended to use super absorbent cloth or chamois cloth. However, any other lint free cloth is also suitable. Drying the bodywork is important, as this will prevent watermarks on the surface.

    Internal Grooming For Your Car
When doing a full detail grooming for your car, try starting with the interior.

Start by Pulling Out the Floor Mats
There are many types of floor mat available in the market. They have the upholstery type or more commonly the rubber/vinyl type.

They also come in various designs. The design does play a part in the way the mat is to be cleaned. Most mats will need to be vacuum then washed or even scrub.

One just needs to hold up on one side and ‘shake’ the mat to clean off the dirt.

For a more thorough clean, follow up by running down water from the top of the mat.

Pull out the plastic, vinyl and rubber parts especially the dash board and inner sides of the door
The dash board is one part in the car’s interior that should always be showroom new as it is the most obvious part.

Other reason is that it is directly exposed to the sunlight.

So in order to prevent discolouration due to the harmful UV lights in sunlight and to prevent it from cracking, cleaning and nourishing it is very important.

This is true for all plastic, vinyl and rubber parts.

As for the dash gauge lenses like the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge etc, avoid dusting as it easily cause fine scratches.

Try using some good and proper plastic cleaner to polish. They can removes light oxidation, chemical degradation, surface contamination, stains and light surface scratches with ease. They are safe to use on plastic rear windows on convertible tops, headlights and taillights.

    Clean the Windows
Clean windows after cleaning the door panels as this will prevent soiling of the windows while doing the dirty work of cleaning door panels etc.

When cleaning windows, first lower the windows slightly and clean the top edge of the window pane.

Then fully close and clean the remainder of the window.

    Clean the Carseats
Car seats are made up of different materials. They are commonly made from fabric/upholstery or leather.

Special care is needed for leather because dirt can get into the pores and it acts like tiny razor blades that cut.

This will cause the leather to crack and these cracks are permanent and irreparable.

Besides removing dirt, leather also need to be nourished or conditioned often.Automotive leather cleaner/conditioner also has UV protection properties. When using this cleaner/conditioner, always remember to shake the bottle well.

Also always test on a small, inconspicuous area to test for colourfastness. As most leather cleaners are meant to clean finish leather, they may not be suitable to be use on suede, buckskin, unfinished leather or fabric.

However these cleaners will not harm vinyl or rubber.

    Cleaning the Carpet
Spray evenly with the carpet cleaner and rub vigorously. Then, wipe it thoroughly with a dry cloth. Don't soak the carpet with water, it will cause mould smell and corrosion under the carpet. One such product is the Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner.

    Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner
  • Formulated with grease cutters and stain lifters, penetrates deep into fabric fibres and removes grease, dirt and odors.
  • Spray directly onto surface, allow the foam to collapse and penetrate the surface and wipe off with a damp cloth
  • (Stubborn stains may require scrubbing. Do NOT allow to dry on surface).
  • As always, test a hidden area of the carpet before using any cleaning product to make sure your particular carpet is colorfast.

    Tips on Your Car Paint
DO - Rinse off the vehicle before washing. It cools down the metal, removes loose dirt, cakes of mud, etc.

DO - Rinse off your vehicle after it has been rained on, to minimise the effects of acid rain.

DO - Wash your car if you see bird droppings, dead bugs or other obvious contaminants building up on the paint surface.

DO - Always use a wet cloth for wiping the car, after rinsing the paint surface with water first.

DO - Use a tar remover for those stubborn spots that the car wash can't remove.

DO - Wax your car only after it has been thoroughly washed, to avoid sealing in any dirt.

DO - Wash from the top of the car to the bottom.

Don't - use laundry detergents or similar harsh soaps to wash your car. Harsh soaps will remove any protective wax as well as the oil in the paint, which will dry out the paint and make it look dull and flat.

Don't - Do not let water droplets dry in the sun on the paint, as these will cause water stains that are difficult to remove.

Don't - Do not use hard water (which contains minerals). It will leave a film on paint surfaces.

Don't - Avoid parking the car in the sun for an extended period of time. This will cause the paint to blister.

How to Choose the Right Drill Bits?
The type of drill bit you need to use depends on what kind of material you are drilling.

    Metal Drill Bits
These bits are for drilling different kinds of metal, but they can also be used to drill wood. High-speed steel (HSS) is the most common material used in metal drill bits. For long-lasting use and for harder materials, buy tungsten carbide or cobalt drill bits.

    Glass, Tile Drill Bits
These drill bits look like a small spear. They have a steel shaft with a carbide tip. When drilling onto glass and tiles, use a low speed on your the drill and disengage the hammer impact mode (if your drill is a hammer drill). Sizes for glass and tile drill bits are limited.

    Masonry and Concrete Drill Bits
Like glass bits, these have a steel shaft with a carbide spear joint brazed into them. The tips are much thicker and are made of impact-resistant carbide. The flutes and shafts are also stronger, to withstand tougher jobs.s

    Wood Drill Bits
The tip of wood drill bits have one central point. With a high cutting capacity, these bits can be used on all types of hard and softwood, plywood and veneer.

    Flat Wood Bits
Flat-sided drill bits range in sizes from ¼” to 1-1/2”. They have a long central point to position the bits better. They are economical, do the cutting job quickly and are easily re-sharpened. It is best to set your electric drill to a slow speed when using them, as they can burn after lengthy use; be especially careful when drilling hardwoods. Stop the drill from time to time and allow the drill bit to cool down.

    Expandable Bits
These drill bits have a central screw point to help pull them through the wood but with a flat cutter and a single spur. They are ideal for larger holes, but they must be kept sharp in order to work effectively.

    Hole Saws
One of the common uses of hole saws is to create holes in doors for locks and security peepholes. There are two types of hole saws: one uses spring steel cutters, which lock into an arbor. The other has a welded steel cup design, which is threaded onto an arbor.

    All About Screwdrivers
Never use a screwdriver as a cold chisel, or for prying, punching, chiseling, scoring or scraping.

Ensure that the tip fits the slot of the screw. If you use a screwdriver that is too large, you may damage the slot in the screw.

Use a long-shanked screwdriver only for jobs in hard-to-reach places. For regular jobs, choose a short shank or ‘stubby’ screwdriver, as these will add extra strength.

Choose screwdrivers which are slightly magnetised. These help to prevent slipping.

Discard a screwdriver with a worn or broken handle or a chipped or worn tip.

Never depend on a screwdriver handle or covered blade to insulate you from electricity. Switch off all appliances first before dismantling. When using a mains tester, test it on an item with less than mains voltage first to see if the insulation is secure.

Building a Safe and Senior-Friendly Bathroom

With Singapore’s aging population, it is not uncommon to have a senior relative staying in our homes. However, the seniors are more prone to accidents such as slipping in the bathroom and wet kitchen floors.

To someone young and healthy, a fall in the bathroom may just result in a bruise. For elders, there could be dire consequences. Thus, making the house safer for seniors is a must for all caregivers.

    Plumbing Tools
Here’s how to replace a worn-out tap washer:

Step 1:   Turn off the water supply for the dripping tap. Then turn on the tap to release any water in the pipes. Putthe plug of the sink in place to stop any screws or other small objects from going down the plughole.

Step 2:   Most taps have a cap with either red or blue colour (to show whether the tap is hot or cold). Lift this off with the tip of a small flathead screwdriver. Underneath you will find the handle screw which holds the tap together. Undo the screw and lift the tap handle off the spindle.

Step 3:   Select a suitable spanner and untighten the tap valve fully. Grasp the tap spout firmly to prevent it from moving as you loosen the valve. Take out the tap valve (some types of taps have fixed jumpers which can’t be removed).

Step 4:   Some tap washers are held in place with a nut which must be removed to pull off the old washer. If not, the washer can simply be prised off. If you are doing this job for the first time, you may want to keep the old washer so that you know which size to buy when you shop for a new washer.

Step 5:   Before replacing a new washer, lubricate the interior parts with grease or other lubricants      – this makes assembly easier.

Step 6:   Put the new washer in place and reassemble all parts.

Step 7:   If the tap is still leaking, it could be that the tap seat is damaged. While changing the washer, check that the seat for the washer is in good condition. If not, it will need regrinding or you may have to get a complete new tap.

Clearing a Clogged Drain, Sewer or Toilet
Here are three ways to unblock your drainage: using a plunger, using a hand auger and using chemicals. Try the plunger way first before you resort to the other two methods.

    Use a Plunger
The sink plunger creates an alternate pressure and vacuum in order to dislodge clogs. There should be enough water in the sink or tub to cover the rubber cup of the plunger. Place the plunger over the drain outlet and plunge up and down rapidly. Use one hand to plunge and the other to keep the cup in place over the drain.

    Use a Hand Auger
This method is useful for stubborn blockages, or for ones that are far down a pipe and out of reach. The hand auger is a flexible shaft with a spiral hook that is inserted into the drain until it meets the blockage. Set the auger lock and crank the tool’s handle to break up the blockage.

    Use Chemicals
Read the instructions on the bottle carefully before proceeding. Check whether the one you have is suitable for use in domestic drains such as in the toilet and kitchen. Chemicals can damage your pipes, so these should be used sparingly. They are also harmful to the environment.

    Caulking the Bathroom
    Step 1
Use a scraper or a knife to scrape away any old caulk, grout and dirt.

    Step 2
    Clean the surface with detergent.

    Step 3
Apply masking tape to both sides of the area you want to caulk (to prevent the caulk from spreading into other areas). Fill the joints with the caulk. Maintain a steady pressure and move at a rate that will fill the crack evenly.

    Step 4
Wet your fingers with cold water (so that the caulk won’t stick to them). Smooth and level the caulk with your wet fingers into a neat, slightly concave bed. (Plastic gloves can also be used, but you will need to wet them)

    Step 5
Peel off the masking tape and discard it.

  • How To Start Removing Old Paint & Varnish?
    With Paint Remover
  • Apply thick layers of paint remover and spread evenly with a paintbrush.
  • Remove as much paint remover as possible with a metal scraper.
  • Steel wool helps to remove more stubborn patches of old paint.
  • When finished, wipe the surface with white spirit.

  • With Sanding
  • An electric sander will speed the paint removal job.
  • Remove as much paint remover as possible with a metal scraper.
  • Be sure you don’t gouge out holes in the wood in your enthusiasm to remove      the old paint or varnish.

  • With Heat

How To Paint The Right Way?
    Step 1 Prepare the surface
  • Wash and clean the wall.
  • Fill up any holes with filler.
  • Scrape away any areas of old or loose paint.
  • Brush off any sand debris.

  • Step 2
Tape up the light fixtures, sockets and other fittings with masking tape to prevent them from being splashed with paint.

    Step 3
    Apply the primer or sealer.

    Step 4
    Apply the undercoat.

Step 5 Apply the finishing coat
  • Start with the ceiling.
  • Then paint the woodwork around the doors and windows.
  • Next, paint the wall.
  • After that, do the cornices and finally paint the skirting.

  • Step 6
Paint the difficult areas first – like edges and corners.

    Step 7
Use a brush or a roller; a roller is easier and faster but uses up more paint. Start at the top corner of one wall. Apply the paint in overlapping strokes from top to bottom. Continue until the wall is finished; then proceed to the next wall until all walls have been painted.

    Step 8
Always paint two coats of finishing paint. Ensure that the first coat is completely dry before applying the second coat.

Protecting your home with alarm Systems
    Get a monitored security alarm.

    Contacts
These are installed on your doors or windows and are wired up to the alarm system. When your system is armed, any breach in those areas, it will trigger an alarm. Remember to disarm in the morning and when you arrive home to avoid setting off the alarm by absent-mindedly opening a window or door.

    Glass-Break Sensors
These detect whether a window has been broken, rather than just opened.

    Motion Detector
The alarm activates when there are any movements within the sensor’s designated range. Do be careful if you tend to get up in the night for a glass of water: you could set your own alarm off.

    Alarm Monitoring
This gives you a 24-hour alarm monitoring service, which will notify you of a tripped alarm if you’re not at home when an intruder has gained access to your premises.

    Protecting Your Home
Whether you live in a flat, apartment or landed property, you ought to have some basic security features that will protect your family and valued possessions.

    Install Lights
Good lighting is one of the greatest deterrents to crime. It is one of the least expensive and most effective ways to reduce break-ins.

    Install an eve-viewer
Use it every time before you open your front door. Ensure that you can see all around your front door.

    Lock your door
A lot of people don’t see the value of a good lock. It must be able to keep people who don’t have the key out, while letting key holders in quickly and conveniently.

    Lock your windows
Rather than use the usual thumb turn locks, get keyed window locks of the kind that uses a deadbolt. Do remember always to keep the key in the same place so you can find it in the dark in case of an emergency.

    Outdoor Survival Kit

Before you venture into the great outdoors, make sure that you are properly equipped.

    Here’s a basic kit:

    Compasses
This helps you locate positions on a map or in your surroundings.

    Swiss Army Knife
An all-purpose camp knife with different blades such as basic blades, screwdrivers, awls, corkscrews, saws, scissors, pliers, etc. The more adventurous you are, the more comprehensive your knife should be.

    LED Torchlight with spare batteries
These are very compact and give out a powerfully bright light.

    Light Sticks
Keep a few packs of these in case your torch runs low on batteries.

    Plastic/Metal Whistle
To alert others if you are in danger or to signal to your expedition members over long distances.

Extra glasses (if you use glasses)
Even if you don’t wear glasses, a magnifying glass can be useful for examining specimens or inspecting wounds in feet. Some pocket knives have a magnifying glass in their pouch.

    Matches
If conditions are damp, use cigarette lighters instead.

    Fire starters
Use these for your camp fire when all the available burning material is damp.

    First Aid Kit
    - Antiseptic Pads
    - Gauze Pads
    - Bottle of Iodine
    - Bandages (various sizes)
You can buy a ready-made first-aid kit which contains everything you’ll need in an emergency. Be sure to read the booklet on how to deal with common problems.

    Mirror
Not for makeup! Use the mirror for signaling to expedition members. It can also be used to start your camp fire, using the reflection of the sun.

    Plastic Poncho
It almost always rains, so be well prepared with a poncho that covers you and your bags completely.

    Water Bottle
Another essential item. Choose a lightweight one with a strap and don't skimp on the size – 75ml to one litre is best.

    Candles
Save your batteries and use candles. These can also assist in starting your campfire.

    Nylon Cord or Rope
Never go anywhere without rope: it’s always useful for something, such as tying up broken shoes, packages and setting up camp in a wooded area.

    Insect Repellent
Keep mosquito-free with natural citronella repellents, or buy an electronic device which emits a high-pitched sound to keep insects at bay.

    Safety Pins
Useful for many things including securing bandages, clothing and bags. Don't leave home without them.

How to Maintain Your Garden Tools
Step 1:   Always remove all of the soil from your digging tools after use.

Step 2:   Thoroughly clean any tools that have been used for chemical applications.

Step 3:   Allow tools to dry completely before storing them, to prevent rusting.

Step 4:   After each use, wipe the metal parts of pruners and shears with an oily rag to keep them rust-free.
